Our Story
The Marlin began as a quinta — a working stone farmhouse that has stood on the slopes of Sete Cidades since 1742. We spent three years restoring it: keeping every original wall, every hand-cut lintel, every trace of the generations who lived here.
What you'll find today is a hotel that doesn't shout. Thick stone walls hold the warmth of a wood fire in winter and the cool of the Atlantic breeze in summer. The twelve rooms open onto a shared garden where bougainvillea spills over ancient walls and the sound of the ocean is always close.
We're not a resort. We don't have a pool, a spa, or a concierge desk. What we do have is a kitchen that cooks only with what the island grows, a library of well-loved books, and a view that makes you forget to check your phone.
Accommodations
Every room is different. No two share the same proportions, the same light, or the same angle on the sea. All share the same standard of comfort.
Ground-floor rooms opening directly onto the garden. Wake to the sound of water and the sight of Sete Cidades lake through the window.
First-floor rooms with original vaulted stone ceilings. Each has a private balcony facing west — the best vantage point for the island's famous sunsets.
The former master quarters of the quinta. Two rooms, a sitting area with a wood-burning stove, and a terrace that wraps around the corner of the building.
What to Do
São Miguel is 737 km² of volcanic craters, thermal springs, lush forests, and coastline that changes with every turn. We'll help you find the paths worth walking.
The trail around Sete Cidades takes three hours and passes two lakes — one blue, one green — with views that shift every minute.
The Furnas valley is dotted with natural hot springs. We'll take you to the ones most locals keep to themselves.
The Azores sit on a migratory corridor. Between April and October, you'll see sperm whales, pilot whales, and occasionally, blue whales.
São Miguel's vineyards grow Verdelho grapes along the coast. We'll arrange a tasting at a family-run estate an hour's drive north.
Dining
Dinner at The Marlin is a single menu, changed daily based on what the fishermen brought in that morning and what the garden produced that week. There's no à la carte. What there is, is a table set with linen, candles, and the sound of the ocean through the open windows.
Breakfast is served on the terrace from 8am to 11am. Fresh bread from the village bakery, cheese from local farms, honey from our own hives, and coffee from a roastery in Ponta Delgada.
