01 — THE HOUSE
A farmer's house, kept for the sea.
Figueira sits on the cliffs above Ribeira Grande, where a fig tree older than the road shades a yard of worn stone. Fourteen rooms, three springs, one long table — and the Atlantic doing what it does, all day, out the west wall.

03 — A DAY HERE
The hours, loosely kept.
Nothing is scheduled that can't be skipped. This is simply how the day tends to go.
-
07:00
Breakfast on the ledge
Eggs from the farm on the ridge, fig bread, coffee roasted in Ponta Delgada. The table faces the swell, so the first course is usually the sea.
-
10:30
The springs
Three heated pools, 38 to 42 degrees. The cistern pool is the oldest — warm since 1962, and the one everyone fights over by eleven.
-
13:30
The table
One seating, twelve courses. What the boats landed and the farms cut this morning, cooked over vine cuttings.
-
16:00
The whale boat
Humpbacks and pilot whales out of Ribeira Grande harbor, May through October. Binoculars provided; patience optional.
-
19:00
Fire table
Natural wine from the vineyards on the ridge, wood from the orchard, and the day told slowly, the Azorean way.
-
22:00
The dark
21.6 mag per square arcsecond — the darkest sky in the archipelago. After 23:00 the house turns off every light it can.
SKY QUALITY 21.6 MAG/SQ ARCSEC · NO EXTERIOR LIGHTING AFTER 23:00
THE SPRINGS
Warm since 1962.
Cut into the basalt behind the house, the springs run 38 to 42 degrees year-round — the island's heat, not ours. The lowest pool is the old cistern, lined in 1962 and never drained since. Steam, eucalyptus, and the sound of the cliff doing its slow work.

THE TABLE
One seating. Twelve courses.
At 19:00, for fourteen. Chef Inês Costa writes the menu at 8 a.m. from what the boats landed and the farms cut — squid ink and lemon, goat from the caldera, figs from our own tree. The wine is natural, mostly from the ridge above the town.

04 — POSTCARDS
Sent back from the island.
What the guests photograph, roughly in the order they photograph it.
05 — GETTING HERE
45 minutes from the plane, a lifetime from the noise.
-
01
Fly
Lisbon → Ponta Delgada (PTL), 2 h 15, daily in season. The window seats face the Azores on the last stretch — ask for the left side.
-
02
Ride
We meet you at the arrivals hall — look for the fig-leaf flag. Forty-five minutes along the coast road, windows down, the caldera opening up on your right.
-
03
Arrive
The house is on the cliff above the town. Look for the fig tree older than the road. A glass of vermouth is already waiting in the hall.

"We came for two nights and stayed for nine. The springs were the excuse — the light was the reason."
"The best breakfast on the island, and it's a strong word for it."
"You stop checking the time. That is the entire review."
